DIRECTOR OF PSYCHOMETRICS
American Board of Family Medicine
The American Board of Family Medicine is seeking someone to fill the position of Director
of Psychometrics. The major responsibility associated with this position is scoring
examinations, including both statistical analysis and standard setting. Additional
responsibilities include participation in ongoing research, supervising a small research staff,
and advising and assisting Diplomates and examination candidates.
The American Board of Family Medicine is one of 24 major medical specialty boards in the
United States, and is responsible for certifying approximately 70,000 family physicians. In
addition, we are involved with other specialty boards in providing certification in sports
medicine, geriatric medicine, adolescent medicine, hospice care and palliative medicine,
and sleep medicine. We also create and score an examination used by family medicine
residency programs to evaluate 10,000 trainees each year. The Director of Psychometrics
will be particularly involved with our primary certification examination, the residency
examination, and the sports medicine examination.
The ABFM also develops additional materials for our maintenance of certification process,
which is gradually being implemented over a period of several years. Future research will
be directed toward evaluating the effectiveness of these materials and processes. In
addition, we will be evaluating our scoring processes, and researching the effect of
imposing different examination assembly and standard setting procedures.
The Director of Psychometrics reports to the ABFM Senior Vice-President, and also interacts
with other executive and supervisory staff, as well as the Board of Directors. This is a fulltime,
in-house position, with a university faculty appointment available. Candidates must
have a doctoral degree in a field related to testing and measurement. The ideal candidate
will also have will have large-scale testing experience and will have published in peerreviewed
literature.
