Position Opening: Research and Data Specialist

Expeditionary Learning Schools, ELS, is a not-for-profit comprehensive school reform organization that emphasizes high achievement through active learning, character growth, and teacher professional development. Expeditionary Learning is now being implemented in over 150 urban, rural, and suburban schools in 26 States, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. ELS reaches over 45,000 students and 4,300 teachers.

Overall responsibility: The primary responsibility of the Research and Data Specialist is to help our organization succeed in creating excellent schools through the use of accurate, relevant, and well-presented data. The gathering, analysis and portrayal of multiple measures of school success are central to this work. The Research and Data Specialist will work closely with, and report to, the Director of Assessment and Research.

Major tasks and responsibilities:
• Working with the Director of Assessment and Research to successfully equip ELS to tell its many evidence-based success stories.
• Gather and analyze school and student-level data.
• Develop research methodologies e.g. tracking students beyond high school.
• Communicate effectively with schools and ELS staff.
• Prepare data reports appropriate for staff, board, schools, donors, colleges, etc.
• Support external evaluations of ELS.
• Build ELS staff and school capacity to understand and utilize data.

Qualifications:
• Master’s degree in educational research, public policy, or comparable & relevant field.
• 3+ years experience with research and assessment in an education or related setting.
• Experience in collection and management of education and/or human services data.
• Strong data analysis skills.
• Strong communication and inter-personal skills
• Belief in the Expeditionary Learning Design Principles, and an affinity for the Core Practice Benchmarks (www.elschools.org).
