Quantitative Methodology
Harvard University Graduate School of Education

The Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE) invites applications for
two faculty positions in Quantitative Methods, at the rank of Assistant,
Associate, or Full Professor (depending on qualifications and
experience). It is our preference that one of these appointments be at
the junior level.

Candidates can come from any background or discipline, but must have a
thorough professional training in statistical methods and possess a
comprehensive understanding of the mathematical and technical
underpinnings of those methods. We are interested in appointing new
colleagues with an active research agenda in any major quantitative
specialty or statistical method that is applicable to education and
social science research. Successful candidates must possess insight
into the rigorous application of quantitative methods in applied
settings, be committed to developing innovative quantitative methods and
bringing those methods into research on education, and be willing to
collaborate enthusiastically with colleagues who conduct empirical
research.

At HGSE, our mission is to teach, advise and mentor a diverse community
of graduate students -- at both Master's and Doctoral levels - and to
build the next generation of successful scholars, policy-makers and
practitioners in education. Quantitative methods courses at HGSE enroll
students from within our own school and from across the University.
Candidates must therefore be committed to providing a cognitive
apprenticeship in quantitative methods to members of an audience whose
primary interests may be substantive, rather than technical and
theoretical. This demands an individual who is committed to excellence
in pedagogy and who is capable of using data-based examples to provide
lucid conceptual explanations of complex statistical methods.

The search committee will begin reviewing applications on December 1,
2008, and continue until the positions are filled. Applicants should
send a hard copy of their curriculum vitae (including home address and
preferred email address), a statement of their research and teaching
interests, and three examples of their work or continuing projects.
Applicants for assistant professor or associate professor should include
three letters of recommendation. Applicants at the rank of full
professor are asked to submit the names of three or more people who can
provide references. Candidates who proceed to a short list may be asked
to submit additional letters or materials.
